Why the Drinking Age Should be 18

The drinking age should be 18 in most states and in all territories of the United States. Although ageists call people who are in the 18-24 age range, “k***”, they are not. A person who is in the 18-24 age range is either a young woman or a young man. Young women and young men who are 18 years old should be treated as a young woman or a young man. Most young women and young men who are 18 would drink alcoholic beverages responsibly if they are taught to and if there is incentive. Young women and young men are more mature and more responsible than what ageist portray them as. Alcohol consumption is not the fault of the alcoholic beverage because it is the responsibility of the person. This means that a person who is acting dumb because she or he is drunk, it’s that person’s fault and not the alcoholic beverage. Young women and young men will choose responsibility when the choices are clear.

The drinking age should also be lowered to 18 where the age of majority law of 18 is because the age of majority should have significant meaning. In too many instances, the age of majority is ignored. There are hotels that require that a person be 21 or older to get a room and the gambling age is usually 21. That’s age discrimination so they are violations of the rights of young women and young men who are in the 18-20 age range. The age of majority should mean that a person can get credit, buy a car, sign a contract, get a hotel room, gamble and drink alcoholic beverages. By making exceptions, the age of majority is disrespected. People who are in the 18-20 age range can sign contracts and get married so them being able to do that, they are mature enough to drink responsibly.

Using the age of 21 as a minimum age is illogical because at 20 years old, a person is decades old. Rather than going purely by numbers, the age of 18 should be used as the minimum age for where people may hold more responsibilities. The drinking should be lowered to 18 because that is when many young women and young go to a university or a college. That’s a big change and going to college should not be treated as going to a boarding school. Binge drinking is a big problem at many universities around the United States but there are solutions. If the drinking age was lowered to 18 and if alcohol education was required, binge drinking by college students would decrease significantly. Like most other people, they can make rational choices so that would be the reason why alcohol responsibility will increase for people who are in the 18-20 age range.
